A saw a ceiling mounted security camera on a Metrorail car this week. Is this something that they will eventually be putting in all Metrorail cars?
I just read the release and the paragraph I found states the following:
Quote:
There would be interactive, linear maps automated announcements stating the station names the trains are servicing and security cameras on all rail cars.

A CCTV system is slated to go onto the 7000 series rail car. The technical specification is currently under development.
It is my understanding based in the Metro considers new look for trains press release that the above mentioned CCTV system is not a surveillance system but is a system for displaying passenger information and live action advertising.

I disagree. There is always a difference between "stated preference" and "revealed preference" in transportation planning. Flatly stated for many commuters the alternative are bad so while many may state they are going to drive very few will.
Putting cameras on the Metrorail cars would be a cost-effective way to gather information about STANDEES. Scientifically taken random sampling, analogous to that used in public opinion polls, would be used to avoid having to pay someone to watch the TV screens all of the time. People around here aren't poor, at least not most of us, and, if the alternative is to ride the public transit standing up, a large fraction of people will buy their own "gas buggies" and drive them sitting down.

Not to mention catching random deer that decide to ride Metro rather than "hoofing it"
Seriously though, assuming you did equip every car with security cameras you would also have to hire somebody to watch all of them and act on what they saw. It seems like it would be more effective to put a policeman on every train and make sure they patrol the length of the train.
I believe that although this was used for a project, it would be beneficial to put cameras ont he trains. There are more and more disruptive teens that cannot maintain themselevs on these trains. They fight curse and run amock, I think that the camera on the trains would be helpful in catching purse snatchings, sexual abuse by passengers and maybe those who plan on committing crimes and devious Acts.
As was previously mentioned, these cameras are part of an ongoing project to determine seating arrangements. The cameras are still installed on some rail cars.

The car you saw that had the camera in it was likely one of the car that was used in the passenger movement surveillance project that was used to design seating configuration in the 6k cars.

I missed that when I first read it. I stand corrected.
